Jamshedpur, January 27, 2025: Tata Steel will decommission Coke Oven Battery #7, India’s first stamp-charge coke oven battery, at its Jamshedpur Works today. Commissioned in 1989, the battery served the steel industry for 36 years, producing over 12 million tonnes of coke and setting benchmarks in efficiency, innovation, and sustainable practices. The decommissioning process involves isolating the battery from the By-Product Plant foul gas network. As part of the procedure, controlled flaring of raw gases will begin at 9:00 AM IST and continue for nearly 24 hours. Tata Steel has assured the public that the process is safe and is being conducted as per standard operating protocols.
This milestone marks the retirement of a pioneering innovation in India’s steel industry, reflecting Tata Steel’s commitment to progress and sustainability.
