Jamadoba, February 17, 2025: Tannu Kumari, an athletics trainee from the Digwadih Youth Development Centre, has won a silver medal in the Modern Pentathlon Laser Run, which was held for the first time at the National Games in Uttarakhand. Tannu Kumari was felicitated by Sanjay Rajoria, General Manager, Jharia Division; Shweta Mishra, Head Administration, Jharia Division; and Rajesh Kumar, Unit Lead Tata Steel Foundation, Jamadoba.

The National Games, regarded as one of the highest levels of sports competition in the country, were held with a prestige akin to the Olympics. This year, Modern Pentathlon was introduced as a new event, and Tannu Kumari’s stellar performance has not only earned her accolades but also brought recognition to the state of Jharkhand. The Youth Development Centre, enabled by Tata Steel Foundation, is committed to boosting and encouraging grassroots athletes and sportspersons by providing them with a platform to hone their skills and participate in national and international tournaments. Through the Foundation’s Grassroots Sports Programme, sporting talents are developed and nurtured across operational locations, tapping into last-mile individuals and bridging the accessibility gap.
So far, in its efforts to promote this discipline, Tata Steel Foundation has established eight sports training centres under the Jharia Division that cater to kids between the ages of 8 and 17, providing them with opportunities to train and represent various levels. Currently, there are nearly 340 candidates across these eight centres, training to pursue their passion and shine at global and national tournaments.
