Netherlands/Mumbai – January 29, 2025: T.V. Narendran, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Tata Steel Netherlands (TSN) and CEO & Managing Director of Tata Steel Ltd, visited the prestigious Tata Steel Chess Tournament in Wijk aan Zee on Wednesday. Narendran, a strong supporter of chess, had the honor of opening the 10th round of the tournament, often referred to as the “Wimbledon of Chess.” During his visit, he engaged in a meet-and-greet session with Indian participants, reinforcing Tata Steel’s commitment to the global chess community.

Expressing his admiration for the event, Narendran highlighted the growing popularity of chess in India. He also referenced the Tata Steel Chess India tournament, which has been held since 2018 and follows a similar model as the Wijk aan Zee edition, combining competitions for top-ranked players, amateurs, and youth. The visit comes at a time when Indian chess is celebrating a historic milestone. Last December, Gukesh D. became the youngest world champion in chess, further igniting India’s passion for the game. With Tata Steel’s continued involvement, the sport is set to grow further, bridging global chess cultures and nurturing future champions.
